New Brighton’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

New Brighton has long been proactive in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. The city’s comprehensive approach encompasses climate action, water quality improvements, and sustainable waste management.

Climate Action Plan

In January 2024, New Brighton approved its Climate Action Plan (CAP), focusing on key areas such as transportation, waste management, water resources, local food systems, greenspace, public health, and the economy. The plan includes an Implementation Matrix to guide staff actions toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building community resilience. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to mitigating climate change impacts and fostering a sustainable future.

Energy Action Plan

Complementing the CAP, the Energy Action Plan, approved in October 2023, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. The plan emphasizes energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption, with targets to increase community-wide energy savings by 40% and boost participation in renewable energy programs by 45% by 2030. These efforts reflect New Brighton’s dedication to clean energy and environmental stewardship.

Water Quality and Flood Control

Addressing water quality and flood control, the Hansen Park Comprehensive Water Management Project, completed in 2019, focused on enhancing water quality and managing flood risks in Hansen Park. The project included constructing an iron-enhanced sand filter to treat stormwater, improving the health of Pike Lake and Long Lake. This initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment to protecting its water resources and mitigating flooding impacts.

Waste Management and Recycling

New Brighton encourages residents to engage in recycling and waste reduction through various programs. The city offers single-sort recycling services and promotes organics recycling, including a food scraps pickup program. Additionally, residents can participate in composting initiatives, with discounted compost bins available to Ramsey County residents. These programs aim to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices within the community.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, New Brighton exemplifies a community dedicated to environmental sustainability and resilience. By implementing strategic plans and engaging residents in sustainable practices, the city continues to make significant strides toward a greener future.
